HC Deb 05 August 1870 vol 203 c1574
MR. LAMBERT

said, be would beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, The cost to the Nation of the Crimean War, and how the money to meet it was raised?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

said, in reply, that to give the cost of the Crimean War would be an analysis of the Votes which he did not feel called upon to enter into. He might state in general terms the manner in which the money was raised. There was an increased funded and unfunded debt of £40,000,000, and the rest was raised by taxes during the time the war continued—about as much more—but that could be ascertained by the hon. Gentleman on reference to the Estimates. Altogether the cost was about £80,000,000.
