HC Deb 11 March 1869 vol 194 cc1091-2
MR. ADDERLEY

said, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether the Newfoundland Legislature have addressed the Queen for admission into the Confederation of the Canada Dominion, according to the Section of the Union Act providing for such admission?

MR. MONSELL

said, in reply, that no Address to the Queen had been received from the Newfoundland Legis- lature for admission into the Confederation of the Canada Dominion; but the Governor of Newfoundland had called attention to the subject in the Speech with which he opened the Session of the General Assembly on January 28, and the House of Assembly, in reply, stated, that they fully concurred with the Governor in thinking that the time had arrived for taking the section of the Union Act providing for such admission into consideration; and they assured the Governor that they would give their consideration to the question of the union of Newfoundland with the Dominion of Canada upon fair and legitimate terms. Resolutions were proposed on the subject in the Newfoundland Legislature, and a telegram had been received stating that the Colonial Legislature had passed a Resolution in favour of joining the Confederation.
