HC Deb 01 March 1869 vol 194 c410
COLONEL SYKES

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for War, On what grounds he refuses to permit the invention of Mr. Groundwater for the re-adaptation of used musket cartridge cases to be tested, so as to ascertain whether or no a considerable saving might not be effected in the consumption of cartridges; and, if it be not the fact that the machinery used by the Government is adapted only for the original construction of the cartridge case, and not for its re-adaptation for service?

MR. CARDWELL

, in reply, said, the Director General of Ordnance was perfectly satisfied with the machinery at present in use, by which a large number of cartridge cases had already been re-adapted.
