SIR STAFFORD NORTHCOTE

said, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether the Government are taking any steps for the preservation of the Fisheries in those rivers in India and Burmah where irrigation works have been constructed, or are in contemplation?

, in reply, said, Dr. Day, the author of the "Fishes of Malabar," was now examining the Indian sea and river fisheries with special reference to this very important subject, and the Secretary of State in Council had directed the Government of India to give every encouragement to officers who, like the acting collector of South Canara, took an intelligent interest in our fisheries.
