HC Deb 23 February 1869 vol 194 cc272-3

Considered in Committee.

(In the Committee.)

THE SOLICITOR GENERAL

, in rising to move "That the Chairman be directed to move the House, that leave be given to bring in a Bill to repeal certain Tests and alter certain Statutes affecting the constitution of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge," said, he did not propose to offer any observations upon the subject, which had been repeatedly before the House. As it had been so often discussed, it would be mere waste of time at present to enter into a lengthened explanation of the subject. He would simply state that the Bill which he intended to introduce was a reprint of the Bill of last year.

MR. MOWBRAY

said, leave was given for the introduction of the Bill in the last Parliament without opposition, and he did not of course intend to make any objection to the present Motion. He rose only for the purpose of saying that in its future stages it would meet with the same opposition as in the last Parliament.

Motion agreed to.

Resolved, That the Chairman be directed to move the House, that leave be given to bring in a Bill to repeal certain Tests and alter certain Statutes affecting the constitution of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Resolution reported:—Bill ordered to be brought in by Mr. SOLICITOR GENERAL, Mr. BOUVERIE, and Mr. GRANT DUFF.

Bill presented, and read the first time. [Bill 15.]
