ARMITSTEADsaid, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether it is true that a Bill has been brought into the Bengal Council, proposing to raise the Port Dues at Calcutta, already so excessive, from four annas per ton to eight annas; and, whether this serious advance of charge has been approved by the Home Government?
MR. GRANT DUFFsaid, in reply, that a Bill had been brought into the Bengal Legislative Council for raising the port dues of Calcutta, but the Government had received no official information about it. In consequence, however, of the receipt of certain memorials, they had already communicated with the Government of India on the subject.
