HC Deb 19 April 1869 vol 195 c1095
MR. HENDERSON

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for War, If any steps have been taken to carry out the Recommendation of the Committee of 1867 for facilitating the retirement of Officers at the age of 60 in the non-purchase Corps of the Army; and, if not, if anything is likely to be done to give effect to the Resolutions passed by that Committee?

MR. CARDWELL

said, in reply, that the only step which had yet been taken was that' instructions had been given by the Treasury for the preparation of a Bill to enable the Commissioners of the National Debt to make those payments of sums of money in lieu of retiring allowances, which form an essential part of the scheme in question. When Parliament had dealt with the Bill, it would be necessary to consider it, as far as the army was concerned, with reference to the relative rapidity of retirement in the various branches of the service.
