HC Deb 11 May 1868 vol 192 cc17-8
SIR CHARLES LANYON

said, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether negotiations are now in progress for the transfer of the Hudson Bay Company's territory; and, if so, at what period the transfer was likely to be made?

MR. ADDERLEY

said, in reply, that under the provisions of the Confederation Act of last year, the two Chambers of the Canadian Legislature had addressed Her Majesty, asking for the annexation of the Hudson's Bay territory to the Government of Canada. It was considered by Her Majesty's Government that the question of Proprietary and Government should go together, and negotiations were therefore set on foot, and were now proceeding; but they were not in a condition to justify him in stating either their nature or progress.
