HC Deb 28 November 1867 vol 190 c328
MR. HEADLAM

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether there has been any further Correspondence concerning the destruction of the Mermaid, and whether the Spanish Government propose to give any compensation to the owners of that vessel?

LORD STANLEY

Yes, Sir, some further Correspondence has taken place on the subject, and the Spanish Government, acting, I am bound to say, in a very fair and friendly spirit, have accepted the suggestion which I made to refer the matter to arbitration. The details have not been yet arranged, but the principle has been agreed upon.
