GREGORYsaid, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, to lay before the House a Copy of the Despatch dated March 6th, from Lord Lyons to the Foreign Office, giving an account of promises made by the Grand Vizier of reforms in the treatment of Christians in Turkey; and, if he has received any intimation that Russia, France, and Austria have given advice to the Porte to cede Crete to Greece?
LORD STANLEYsaid, in reply to the first Question of the hon. Member, that on seeing his notice, he had brought down that despatch and it was now upon the table of the House. In answer to the second Question of the hon. Gentleman he had to state that he had been informed that advice of that nature had been given by the French Government, and he understood, although he did not know with absolute certainty, that it would be supported by the Government of Russia, while he was not aware that a similar course would be taken by the Government of Austria.
