§ MR. GREGORYsaid, he wished to ask the Chief Secretary for Ireland, Whether the works sanctioned to alleviate the distress in West Galway have been begun; and if not, why not?
LORD NAASsaid, in reply, that these were not, in the strict sense of the term relief works; but were ordinary fishery pier works, undertaken under the provisions of a statute. One had been commenced yesterday, and he was in great hopes that the works at Clifden Pier would soon be begun, and they would, by the employment given, relieve a considerable portion of the distress referred to by the hon. Member.
