HC Deb 11 April 1867 vol 186 cc1480-1
MR. HENRY BAILLIE

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for War, Whether it is true that shot have been cast in sand at Woolwich without being chilled, which were brought into competition with Major Palliser's projectiles, and which gave precisely the same results as though they had been cast in chill?

SIR JOHN PAKINGTON

It is true, Sir, that shot has been cast in sand at Woolwhich without being chilled, and have great penetrating power; but as to the results, I am not at present able to state them. As to economy of manufacture, I am given to understand that the chilled iron has decidedly the advantage.
