MR. WHALLEY

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in reference to Turnpike Trusts, Whether he intends to give any and what effect to the Report of the Committee of 1864 as to the abolition of Tolls, therein stated to be— Unequal in pressure, costly in collection, inconvenient to the public, and injurious as causing a serious impediment to intercourse and trafic; and that the "Abolition thereof would be beneficial to the community?"

MR. BARING

said, in reply, that effect had been given to a certain extent to the recommendations of the Report referred to by the hon. Gentleman. With respect to the general recommendations of the Committee, however, it would be more convenient to the House that any lengthy explanation which might be necessary-should be deferred till the second reading of the Bill dealing with those matters.
