HC Deb 20 July 1866 vol 184 c1163
MR. EWART

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, What course the Government intend to pursue with regard to the Law of Capital Punishment Amendment Bill?

MR. WALPOLE

said, in reply, that, as the provisions of the Bill varied considerably from the recommendations of the Commissioners, owing to the great diversity of views upon the subject, Her Majesty's Government did not propose to proceed with the measure during the present Session. At the same time, they were of opinion that it would be better to go to a first reading, in order that the Bill might be printed.
