HC Deb 19 July 1866 vol 184 c1071
MR. SAUNDERSON

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for War, Whether the attention of Her Majesty's Government has been directed to the question of substituting cast-steel barrels, bored in the solid, for the iron barrels employed in the manufacture of the Enfield rifle?

MR. WALPOLE

said, in the absence of his right hon. Friend (General Peel), he would state that the attention of the proper authorities had been for some time past directed to this subject, and experiments were still in progress which might possibly lead to the substitution of cast-steel barrels for those now employed in the Enfield rifles.
