HC Deb 23 April 1866 vol 182 c1974

MR CRAWFORD moved— That it be an Instruction to the Select Committee on East India Communications, that they be empowered to extend their inquiry to China and Japan and Australia and the Mauritius.

MR. CHILDERS

said, he trusted that the Instruction would not prevent the Committee from going straight through the inquiry as regarded China and Japan before they came to Australia.

MR. CRAWFORD

said, that Australia and the Mauritius would only be considered incidentally until the other portion of the inquiry was completed. It had, however, been doubted whether, under the original Order of Reference, the Committee were justified in hearing evidence even incidentally with respect to Australia.

Motion agreed to.

Instruction to the Select Committee on East India Communications, that they be empowered to extend their inquiry to China and Japan and Australia and the Mauritius.—(Mr. Crawford.)—Select Committee to consist of seventeen Members:—Mr. MARSH and Mr. BROOKS added to the Committee.

House adjourned at half after Twelve o'clock.
