HC Deb 15 May 1865 vol 179 cc302-3
MR. BAXTER

said, he would beg to ask the noble Lord the Member for Had- dingtonshire (Lord Elcho) Whether, considering the late period of the Session, and the great variety of interests affected by the Roads and Bridges (Scotland) Bill, he will consent to defer its further consideration till next. Parliament?

LORD ELCHO

replied, that as the interests affected by any measure of this kind would not be less various in another Session than they were in the present, and as he considered it most desirable to effect some legislation upon the subject, he thought the objecting interests in question should state upon what grounds they objected to the Bill. He, therefore, in order to give them an opportunity of expressing those objections, proposed to proceed with the Bill to-morrow, and afterwards to re print the Bill with such Amendments as should be suggested, so as to make it more palatable, or, at all events, less unpalatable, to the people of Scotland.
