HC Deb 13 March 1865 vol 177 c1536
MR. PEACOCKE

said, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether he will lay upon the table of the House, all the Papers relating to the extradition from the Canadian territory of Captain Beale, an officer in the service of the Confederate States?

MR. LAYARD

said, that as far as he was aware, the Question of his hon. Friend was put under a misapprehension. He (Mr. Layard) was not aware that Captain Beale was surrendered by the colonial authorities to the United States Government. On the contrary, it was stated in the newspapers of the United States that Captain Beale was arrested in the State of New York. But no information has been received upon the subject, either at the Foreign Office or the Colonial Office.
