HC Deb 10 March 1865 vol 177 c1475
MR. WESTERN

said, he rose to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether it is his intention to bring in any Measure founded on any of the Recommendations contained in the Report from the Select Committee on Registration of County Voters; and, if not, whether he proposes to introduce any Bill for the amelioration of the present system of County Registration? Since he had given this notice a Bill on the subject had been introduced by the hon. Member for North Northamptonshire (Mr. Hunt), but he hoped the Home Secretary would state the views of the Government.

MR. T. G. BARING

said, in reply, that last Session a Bill had been introduced by the hon. Member for East Sussex (Mr. Dodson), founded on the recommendations of the Select Committee; but with respect to this year, that hon. Member was unable to bring it forward again, on account of his now holding the position in the House as Chairman of Committees. The hon. Member for North Northamptonshire (Mr. Hunt), had introduced a Bill founded upon the recommendations of the Select Committee, although, from the explanations of the hon. Member, it appeared that he did not go so far as the Committee. Under these circumstances, it was not the intention of the Government to introduce a Bill on the subject.
