HC Deb 10 February 1865 vol 177 c137
MR. MOOR

asked the Secretary for the Colonies, Whether it is the intention of Her Majesty's Government to discontinue the transportation of criminals to Australia; and, if so, at what period such discontinuance will be commenced?

MR. CARDWELL

The papers which have been laid upon the table show that it is the intention of Her Majesty's Government to propose to Parliament measures for the total discontinuance of transportation to the Australian Colonies, and also that the time within which the necessary arrangements can be made in this country for carrying that change into effect has been calculated not to exceed three years.
