MR. WYLD

said, he rose to move an Address for Copies of all Correspondence between Her Majesty's Government and Mr. Petherick, Her Britannic Majesty's Consul at Khartouna, relating to Slavery and the Slave Trade that exists on the White Nile, from the year 1860 to the present time.

Motion made, and Question proposed, That an humble Address be presented to Her Majesty, praying that She will be graciously pleased to give directions that there be laid before this House, Copies of all Correspondence between Her Majesty's Government and Mr. Petherick, H.B.M. Consul at Khartouna, relating to Slavery and the Slave Traffic that exists on the White Nile, from the year 1860 to the present time: Of all Correspondence between the British Consul General of Egypt and Consul Petherick on the same subject, and during the same period; Of all Correspondence between the Foreign Office and any other Departments of Her Majesty's Government and the British Consul General in Egypt, upon the same subject, and during the same period: And, of the Charges, and of the Correspondence connected with these Charges, sent by the people of Khartouna to the British Consul General in Egypt, accusing Consul Petherick of having been engaged in Slave Trading on the White Nile, together with the British Consul General's Reply to these people's accusations, and of his representations (if any) made to Consul Petherick on the same subject."—(Mr. Wyld.)

MR. LAYARD

said, the only objection was that the letters for which the hon. Gentleman moved had been given in the Slave Trade papers laid on the table of the House. With regard to the correspondence which might clear Consul Petherick's character as to his connection with the slave trade in the Upper Nile, none had yet been received. Despatches had arrived that day from Consul Petherick; but he had not had an opportunity of seeing them. Any information upon this subject he would give when it came to hand if the hon. Gentleman would defer his Motion.
