HC Deb 13 May 1864 vol 175 c466
MR. DARBY GRIFFITH

said, he rose to call attention to the permission given by the Government to the Austrian Squadron to leave these shores, and to take up a position favourable for the further prosecution of hostilities against Denmark, without any practical check or supervision by means of the presence of a British Naval force. It would be in the recollection of the House, that in the beginning of the week a question was asked of the Government with reference to the Austrian Squadron which had passed up the Channel. The right hon. Gentleman, in answering the question, seemed somewhat to avoid the real question. He said that the vessel was not going to the Baltic, but he did not give the slightest intimation that she had gone to the North Sea. He hoped the right hon. Gentleman would not give the sanction of his example to such an evasive mode of answering questions.
