HC Deb 10 March 1864 vol 173 c1758
MR. G. CLIVE

said, he would beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether it is the intention of Her Majesty's Government to make any provision for placing the stipend of the Regius Professor of Greek in the University of Oxford on a proper footing, he being appointed by the Crown?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

said, in reply, that Her Majesty's Government had no power whatever to deal with any funds which were available for increasing or otherwise altering the stipend of the Regius Professor of Greek at Oxford; nor were they in possession of any facts which would enable them to know that the matter had been definitively settled, so far as the University of Oxford was concerned; at any rate, the Government had no funds for the purpose.
