HC Deb 14 April 1864 vol 174 c969
GENERAL BUCKLEY

said, he wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for War, Whether it is in contemplation to provide the Drill Instructors of Volunteer Corps clothing and accoutrements in the same manner as if they were in a Regiment of the Line?

THE MARQUESS of HARTINGTON,

in reply, said, the pay of 2s. 7d. a day which Drill Instructors of Volunteers Corps, not Pensioners, received was constituted as follows:— 2s. 1d., which was the sum they would receive if they were Sergeants in the Line; 4d., lodging allowance; and 2d., compensation for clothing. If in addition to compensation for clothing the Government undertook to clothe the Instructors, the latter would be in a better position than Sergeants in the Line, which was not intended. There was, therefore, no intention to provide them with clothing.

GENERAL BUCKLEY

said, that in the Artillery the Sergeants were clothed.

THE MARQUESS OF HARTINGTON

stated that the Sergeants in the Artillery Corps were still attached to the army.
