COLONEL STAKESsaid, he rose to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, How it is intended to appropriate the balance of nearly half a million of dollars of the first Chinese indemnity remaining in the Treasury; and whether any rejected claims will be re-considered.
MR. PEEL, in reply, said, the question of those claims had been adjudicated upon many years ago, and he did not consider it desirable that they should be re-opened. The balance of the fund was, as stated by the hon. and gallant Member, nearly half a million of dollars. He could not say precisely how it would be appropriated; but most probably it would be applied towards defraying the expenses of the war.
