HC Deb 22 May 1862 vol 166 cc2026-7
SIR JOHN PAKINGTON

I wish, Sir, to ask the First Lord of the Treasury, Whether it is the intention of Her Majesty's Government, in accordance with the feeling strongly expressed on both sides of the House, to introduce any measure on the subject of Church Rates during the present Session?

VISCOUNT PALMERSTON

Sir, whatever may have been the wish of the House expressed on that subject I think the House must at the same time have seen what are the difficulties which surround the question with a view to any satisfactory arrangement. All I can say is, that Her Majesty's Government are not prepared at present to undertake that task.
