HC Deb 02 June 1862 vol 167 c265

Order for Second Reading read.

THE SOLICITOR GENERAL

, in moving the second reading of this Bill, said, its object was to extend the Statute of Limitations, and to shorten the time within which an absolute title would grow up to thirty years. It appeared to him, that if a tenant for life of an estate sold it for a valuable consideration, the purchaser would, under the Bill, shut out the reversioner after thirty years. As, however, the measure came down from the other House on the high authority of Lord St. Leonards, he had consented to move the second reading.

SIR HUGH CAIRNS

said, he believed the effect of the measure would be to enable a tenant for life to cut off the rights of the tenant in remainder, and put the money he received for the injury in his pocket. If the House thought that a desirable object, it would pass the present Bill, but not otherwise.

Bill read 2°, and committed for Monday, 16th June.
