HC Deb 21 July 1862 vol 168 c642

MR. BUTT moved that the Bill should be recommitted for the purpose of inserting clauses empowering grand juries to give compensation to dismissed Inspectors of weights and measures.

SIR ROBERT PEEL

said, it was admitted that these charges could not be thrown upon the Consolidated Fund. Then, how could they justly be thrown upon the county cess, when it was clear that the Inspectors were removable at the pleasure of the grand juries? He hoped the House would not consent to the Motion of the hon. and learned Member.

COLONEL FRENCH

said, the understanding was, that if these parties had any claim to compensation, it should come out of the Consolidated Fund. He opposed the Motion.

Motion made, and Question, That the Bill be re-committed, for the purpose of inserting the following Clause (Compensation of dismissed Inspectors, and stamping of Weights and Measures), —put, and negatived.

Bill to be read 3° To-morrow, at Twelve of the clock.

House adjourned at Two o'clock.
