HC Deb 14 May 1861 vol 162 c2051
MR. TORRENS

said, he wished to ask the Secretary of State for India, with reference to the Letter from him to the Governor General of India in Council, dated the 26th of May, 1860, directing that the case of Claimants against the late State of Onde yet to be reported on, should be investigated, as desired by the late Court of Directors, in their Letter to the Governor General of India in Council, dated the 17th of June, 1857, whether he intends to take any steps for the adjustment of the Claims of the parties whose cases have been already reported on in the Letters from the Governor General of India in Council, dated respectively the 17th of May and the 8th of September, 1859?

SIR CHARLES WOOD

said, that the Government of India had reported upon certain cases, but whether they were investigated in accordance with the assurance given by the noble Lord who preceded him at the India Board, he could not say. He (Sir Charles Wood) had written to the Governor General, to ask how the investigation had been conducted, but he had not yet received an answer. He did not think he should be justified in proceeding to act upon the Report until he had received further information.
