HC Deb 18 April 1861 vol 162 c720
MR. DARBY GRIFFITH

said, he rose to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether any circular or other Despatch has been received from the Italian Government, or whether information has reached him from any other source, stating that Agents of the Austrian Government are seeking to obtain, by purchase or otherwise, Conges, or other documents of identification of Garibaldian or other Volunteers leaving the Italian Service; and, if so, whether any and what communication has been made by the Government to the Austrian Government?

LORD JOHN RUSSELL

stated that no despatch had been received from the Italian Government; but at the same time he had been informed from Turin that such means as those to which the hon. Gentleman referred were to be resorted to by the Austrian commanders or officers. He had not made any formal representation on the subject; but he had mentioned the matter casually to the Austrian Ambassador, who told him that he had never heard the report in question, which he believed to be entirely without foundation.
