DEEDESsaid, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether it is the intention of the Government to bring in any measure this Session to repeal the Acts relating to the appointment and payment of Parochial Constables, namely, 5 & 6 Vict., c. 109; 13 Vict., c. 20; and part of 7 & 8 Vict., c. 52?
SIR GEORGE LEWISsaid, the Acts to which the hon. Gentleman referred were passed at a time anterior to the passing of the County Police Act, and therefore under a different state of things from that now existing. The changes made in the Law seemed certainly to render it desirable that those formal enactments should be reconsidered. He had taken steps to procure information as to their practical operation, and should be prepared to bring in a Bill on the subject.
