HC Deb 07 May 1860 vol 158 cc755-6
SIR WILLIAM MILES

said, he wished to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, When he proposes to bring in the Bill for the Amendment of the Law of Rating, which he has stated be has prepared?

SIR GEORGE LEWIS

said, a Bill, of which the main object was to render the system of rating in England uniform, and also up to the full value of the tenement, had been prepared, and should be brought forward when there appeared any advantage in doing so. Certainly the discussion which had lately taken place showed that the present system of rating was not in a very satisfactory state. He was afraid that if he were to introduce the Bill it would simply lie upon the table, as there seemed no possibility of the Government being able to carry through any of the business, in addition to that which they had in progress already.
