HC Deb 12 June 1860 vol 159 c332
MR. O. STANLEY

said he rose to ask, Whether it is true that Colonel Hamilton has been appointed Military Attaché to the Court of Prussia, and whether it is the intention of the Government to appoint Military Attaches to the other Courts of Europe?

VISCOUNT PALMERSTON

The Government of France have appointed Military Attachés to the missions at almost all their Embassies at the principal Courts. The British Government have long had a Military Attaché to the Embassy at Paris, and it has also been thought expedient to appoint one at Berlin. I am not prepared to state the extent to which my noble Friend the Secretary for Foreign Affairs intends to carry the system.

SIR JOHN PAKINGTON

I should be glad to know whether the Government of France have lately appointed a Naval Attaché to their Embassy here, and whether Her Majesty's Government intend to appoint a Naval Attaché to the Embassy at Paris.

VISCOUNT PALMERSTON

said, the French Government have attached a Naval Officer to the Embassy here. I do not know whether my noble Friend has decided on taking a similar step in respect to our Embassy at Paris.
