HC Deb 06 July 1860 vol 159 c1526
MR. H. BAILLIE

said, he wished to ask the Lord Advocate, Whether he intends to bring in a Bill to maintain the Salaries of the Scotch Schoolmasters, or whether he intends to leave them to their fate until he is able to pass through both Houses a general measure for Education in Scotland?

THE LORD ADVOCATE

said, it appeared to him—and he believed he was supported by the general feeling of the House—that it would not be right to deal with the salaries of the parochial schoolmasters till they dealt with the question of exclusive tests. Repeated attempts had been made to repeal those tests, but never with success. He hoped next Session to find such unanimity prevailing among the Scotch Members on the subject as to enable him to place it on a satisfactory footing.
