HC Deb 29 July 1859 vol 155 c671
LORD JOHN MANNERS

said, he wished to ask whether the Government intended to take up the church rates Abolition Bill and help it through its remaining stages, or to take no further steps in the matter?

SIR GEORGE LEWIS

said, that at present there was quite sufficient Government business to occupy the time of the House, both morning and evening, for some days to come, and all the Government could do was to give precedence to the business which must necessarily be transacted before the Session could be closed, and which, therefore, it was the general interest of hon. Members to dispose of as soon as possible.
