HC Deb 04 May 1858 vol 150 c19
CAPTAIN GRAY

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary for War what are the intentions of the Government in regard to the Regiments of Militia now at Aldershot, and whether such regiments as have been furnished with the Enfield rifle will be continued in an embodied state for such a length of time as will afford them a fair opportunity of being brought to a state of efficiency in the use of that weapon?

GENERAL PEEL

said, he had to acquaint the hon. and gallant Member that it was not the intention of the Government to disembody any more Regiments of Militia at present. He placed the fullest reliance on the desire of each militia regiment to pay due attention to drill, and he had not the slightest doubt that those regiments which happened to be furnished with the Enfield rifle would be afforded the fullest opportunity of being brought to a state of efficiency in the use of that weapon.
