HC Deb 03 June 1858 vol 150 c1447
MR. MILNER GIBSON

said, the right hon. Gentleman the Chancellor of the Exchequer told the House the other night that he would be able shortly to inform them whether he could lay on the table the correspondence relative to the canal across the Isthmus of Suez. He had now to ask, therefore, whether the Government are prepared to produce the whole of the correspondence that has taken place between the Government of England and the English Embassy at Constantinople on that subject; also, the correspondence that has taken place between the Government of England and any other Foreign Government relative to the same matter?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

The right hon. Gentleman is quite correct in stating that I said I should be prepared to give a reply to this inquiry; and I have now to say that it will not be convenient to lay that correspondence on the table of the House.
