§ MR. CHEETHAMsaid, he wished to ask the President of the Board of Control, why the Return respecting New Roads and Navigable Canals in India, ordered by the House last Session, has not yet been laid upon the Table?
LORD STANLEYsaid, the reason was that sufficient materials did not exist in England to enable the Returns alluded to by the hon. Member to be made out. An order, had, however, been sent out to India for the information desired, and he had a letter from Colonel Bateman, in which he called on the local authorities in every part of India to furnish the details necessary. Probably, however, the disturbed state of the country had caused delay, and all he could now say was that they had not the information at present, but as soon as it was obtained it should be brought forward.
