HC Deb 19 April 1858 vol 149 c1264
MR. LAURIE

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary for War whether the Officers of the Army ought to be subjected to payment of a tax upon their commissions granted by Her Majesty?

GENERAL PEEL

said, he must inform the hon. Member that there was no tax upon an officer's commission, and that all such taxes and fees had been taken off for some time. There was a stamp upon a commission, just as upon all others, but the remission of that stamp was of course a matter for the consideration of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
