HC Deb 18 March 1857 vol 144 cc2427-8

In answer to Sir DENHAM NORKEYS,

MR. WILSON

said, that the only line of telegraphic communication between India and Europe with regard to which the Government had at present entered into any engagements was the line going from Seleucia to Kornah, on the Persian Gulf. The company would have two years granted to them for making their arrangements, and, of course, in the mean time the Government would not entertain any other project.

In reply to Mr. OTWAY,

MR. WILSON

said, the only assistance to be given to the company would be in the way of payment for work done when the line was completed. An application was before the Treasury for assistance to a company proposing to establish a line of railway, but no definite resolution had been come to on the subject.
