said, he wished to know what the intentions of the Government were with regard to the Corrupt Practices at Elections Act, which would expire before the next general election.

SIR GEORGE GREY

said, it was his impression that that Act was to continue in force till August, 1857, and until the end of the then next Session of Parliament.

That is so.

Is it, then, the intention of the Government to leave the law as it is?

SIR GEORGE GREY

said, a Committee had been appointed to inquire into the operation of the Act in question; but it was quite impossible that that inquiry could be fully gone into, and any important alterations in the Act be passed into law before the end of the present Parliament. Under those circumstances the Government would not take any step in the matter until the assembling of the next Parliament.
