HC Deb 05 March 1857 vol 144 c1893
MR. OLIVEIRA

said, he wished to know whether the system of payment adopted in India would be extended to the payment of officers at other stations, and whether they would in future be paid in cash instead of bills of exchange?

SIR CHARLES WOOD

said, that the system of payment on foreign stations was by bills drawn on the Accountant General, on which those to whom they were paid sometimes gained and sometimes lost. But a short time ago a system of cash payment was introduced on the East India station. Whether the latter system should be extended to other stations was at present under the consideration of the Board of Admiralty.
