THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

said, he had to move a Resolution, on which to found a Bill, authorizing Her Majesty to guarantee the repayment of a loan of £500,000 for the service of the province of New Zealand, with interest at the rate of 4 per cent. Further explanations would be given on the second reading of the Bill.

SIR JOHN TRELAWNY

said, he wished to give notice that, unless better reasons were advanced in support of this measure than he had yet heard, he should oppose the Bill at a future stage.

Resolution agreed to. Resolved, "That Her Majesty be authorised to guarantee the repayment of a Loan, to an amount not exceeding £500,000, for the service of the Province of New Zealand, together with the interest thereon, not exceeding four pounds per cent per annum, and that provision be made out of the Consolidated Fund of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, for the payment from time to time of such sums of money as may become payable by Her Majesty under such Guarantee.
