HC Deb 05 February 1857 vol 144 c218
MAJOR SIBTHORP

said, he would beg to inquire of the First Lord of the Treasury whether Her Majesty's Government intended to take any measures for the release of the British Seamen shipwrecked on the coast of Formosa, and now in captivity on that Island.

SIR GEORGE GREY

said, orders had been sent out to Sir John Bowring the Governor of Hong Kong to communicate with the admiral on the station, and to desire him to ascertain whether the report was true that British subjects were held in captivity in the Island of Formosa, and, if so, to adopt the best means for obtaining their release.
