HC Deb 11 August 1857 vol 147 cc1391-2

On the Motion for going into Committee of Supply,

COLONEL NORTH

said, in the absence of his hon. and gallant Friend (General Windham,) he would beg to ask, whether, when a clergyman entered the army as Assistant Chaplain, his service counted for his retirement in the same way as that of an Assistant Surgeon; and, if not, what was the reason?

SIR JOHN RAMSDEN

replied, that the services of Assistant Chaplains did not count in the same way as those of Assistant Surgeons, because, while the latter were commissioned officers, Assistant Chaplains only held temporary appointments.
