HC Deb 06 August 1857 vol 147 c1207

Order for Committee read.

House in Committee.

Clause 1 (Guaranteeing a loan of £500,000).

MR. HENLEY

objected to the amount of £500,000, and proposed in lieu thereof £320,000. His object in doing so was merely to enter his protest against the proposal as it stood in the clause.

SIR JOHN TRELAWNY

said, as he strongly objected to the loan, he should support the Amendment.

MR. LABOUCHERS

said, that the feeling of those persons in New Zealand who were the most zealous advocates of the claims of the natives was decidedly in favour of the object of that portion of the loan which the right hon. Gentleman would expunge.

Amendment negatived. Clause agreed to.

The other clauses of the Bill were also agreed to.

The House resumed.

Bill reported; as amended, to be considered To-morrow, at Twelve o'clock.
