HC Deb 25 July 1856 vol 143 c1426

In reply to Mr. MURROUGH,

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

observed that the law officers of the Crown had given an opinion to the effect that it was desirable that the usage heretofore followed with respect to the obligation of Secretaries of State to take out patents for their office should be maintained, and as long as the law remained unchanged that practice would be adhered to.

MR. MURROUGH

inquired whether, that being the case, it was to be understood that such Secretaries of State as had neglected to pay for their patents would do so now?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

Assuredly. All the Secretaries of State now in office will take out their patents.
