MR. PERCYsaid, he would beg to ask the right hon. President of the Poor Law 1220 Board, whether a Report had been presented to the Government on the state of the St. Pancras or St. Marylebone workhouses; and whether he would lay such Report on the table of the House?
§ MR. BOUVERIE, in reply, said, that in November last, one of the ordinary inspectors under the Poor Law Board had made a Report with regard to St. Pancras workhouse. In consequence of that Report, he had appointed a medical gentleman as a temporary inspector to inquire into the management of the establishment. He should state that the St. Pancras workhouse was under the direction of a local Board appointed by a local Act, and not under the immediate control of the Poor Law Board. He had lately received the Report of the medical inspector, which described the state of things in the workhouse to be horrible. He had directed the Report to be forwarded to the local authorities, and he hoped they would take steps to apply instant and urgent remedies to those evils.
§ MR. BOUVERIEsaid, he should have no objection to do so.
