HC Deb 14 May 1855 vol 138 cc561-2

Upon the Order of the Day for the consideration of this Bill, as amended,

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

said, that he was prepared to accede to the Amendment proposed by an hon. and gallant Gentleman opposite (Admiral Jones). He thought that the Bill was already quite equal to meet the difficulty against which the hon. and gallant Member wished to provide, but he had no objection to insert the words mentioned in the hon. and gallant Member's notice.

ADMIRAL JONES

said, he would beg to move, to insert in Schedule B, after "eight hundred and fifty-five," the words "or bonded under the Act of the 17 & 18 Vict., c. 27, and marked on or after the 8th day of May, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-four."

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

said, he would suggest that the hon. and gallant Member should withdraw the Amendment which he had moved, and give notice of that and any other Amendments which he might wish to make, all of which could then be considered upon the third reading of the Bill, which he (the Chancellor of the Exchequer) proposed should take place on the morrow.

ADMIRAL JONES

said, he would assent to the proposal of the right hon. Gentleman.

In reply to Mr. GROGAN,

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHE-QUER

said, he proposed immediately after Whitsuntide to bring in a Bill, to come into operation on the 1st of October next, to promote the distillation of spirits from malt in bond, and to make some small addition to the duty. It was also his intention to extend the same regulations to sugar as to malt.

The Bill was ordered to be read a third time to-morrow.
