HC Deb 03 May 1855 vol 138 cc31-2
SIR STAFFORD NORTHCOTE

said, he begged to ask what arrangements were intended to be made in connection with the department of science and art, and particularly with regard to the Museum of Practical Geology, in consequence of the death of Sir Henry de la Beche?

VISCOUNT PALMERSTON

said, the loss of Sir Henry de la Beche would, of course, be deeply felt by the institution, as well as by science and art generally. It was, however, the intention of Her Majesty's Government to fill up the vacancy by the appointment of Sir Roderick Murchison. Sir Roderick Murchison was fully competent for the office, and a memorial bad been presented in his favour, signed by almost every distinguished man connected with science.
